I think that passage refers to an actual disease with like open pustules that weep and smell. The fetor of diseased and dying flesh.

In my defense, given the decades of people talking about "Needing to use the Mark of the Beast to engage in commerce" and then seeing articles talking about denying transportation or goods to people to don't get the vaccine--reading these descriptions in Revelations kind of left me on edge.
