There are infinite ways to remove that information from a get request. A referral isn't necessary. You can make your browser have everything appear as though you manually typed in the URL.
You can even have the browser lie about the referral and make it be any website you want. Including itself referring itself.

It's already a feature in many privacy featured addons. Also most requests of that sort are likely embeds. So all it takes is the website owner to set that thus solving it for everyone.

Yeah, but the majority of people don't understand any of that. It would have to a default feature in the browser and the main browsers kowtow to whatever the larger tech companies say so unlikely for chrome, ie, firefox. I could see possibly the brave browser doing something like that as a default feature.
