The only way this story can backfire on him is if he goes contrarian and tries to downplay the story, while anti trumpers do the contrary
Because when shit is going to turn bad, then yeah, he'll be accused of vastly underestimating the threat, of incompetence

On the flip side if he goes all in like "Ok this is super bad" then markets will factor that and he'll be blamed for cracking the match that started the whole dumpster fire

Just default on the good old "competent people and institutions are working on it, and we're following the situation very closely, next question please" type of political stance.
