I hope you are not blaming me for the current state of affairs? As stupid as it is, in the US the boy can lgeally join army and kill or get killed, yet still is not allowed to buy the beer. This is really not my fault and as a Russian myself - Im quite shocked. But again, thats not because of our meddling :) 16 y.o can also drive a car in the US I think? Well then - it's way more challenging than having sex IMHO. And regarding free speech in school - well, I have nothing to say
Obvious(to me at least) I'm not blaming any single individual for the state of affairs in the US currently. Its been a slow progression of the erosion of rights. I also don't think its unique to the US either although I can't say I personally have lived anywhere else.
My point in the whole thing is we in the west seem to like to pick and choose what rights we think people should have arbitrarily. Common sense doesn't seem to be a factor.
In our case: legal rights: 18.yo. (cigs, alco, marriage, voting, driving license, military, you name it). Age of consent: 16 (same like US) Pregnant girl between 16-18 can legally get married if all sides and parents agree. I completely dont understand (culture shock I think) the age/responsibilities ratio in the US. Also if you are 18 yo and in the school - you are adult. Nobody can forcibly keep you there if you feel like not going today or you want to leave earlier (doh!) Maybe it's me, but it makes much more sense.
