this virus dies off faster in equator environments, and can last nearly a month in colder climates. With how this is designed to be airborne, it seems like a targeted pathogen to be spread. However, china's intended target would not be the usa, its biggest trading partner and source of its economy, it would be africa to purge the primitives and clear the land for Chinese colonization. the detraction from this hypothesis is that the virus does not survive in africa's climate, which would indicate this virus was not finalized when a release occurred.
Another possibility is that this virus was intended to target colder climates, with china not caring about whole cities in their own country, and their rivals being in cold climates such as europe, russia, and the USA. That's why i was not sure if i was reading the article right, it has the same name, but turns out corona virus is a class of virus' not a specific name, and this report is a generalization of a sample of virus from within that group.
