> Beijing has been unwilling to use the People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces to intervene in the protests, but if more Chinese businesses are firebombed, then it's likely PLA forces could lock down the city in the near term.
This could be the excuse.
Indeed
However, it's not the first time chinese companies/interests get hurt over there since the beginning of the events https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyYgNDQ0XMU Chinese linked companies targeted during Hong Kong protests
And the chinese attitude hasn't changed one bit
I suspect their strategy is to make sure there's no porosity between mainland china and hong kong, regarding movements of people, goods, ideas... And basically let hong konger rot in "their shit" (we aren't even sure at this point how genuine those riots are, could very well be a 50/50, it's genuine and not really at the same time. Now who's pushing the shit? US? China? Real hong kongers? A mix in between ?... Who knows for sure) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/22/where-were-the-police-hong-kong-outcry-after-masked-thugs-launch-attack
...
What's for sure is that, china isn't cracking down hard on those "dissents" for lack of better word, as they usually do
Now why exactly, idk, could be many things
