Symphony No. 94 in G major, H. 1/94 ‘Surprise Symphony’ by Joseph Haydn
Haydn composed this symphony in 1791 to be performed in a series of concerts he was giving in England. The symphony had its premiere at the Hanover Square Rooms in London in 1792. The symphony is comprised of four movements: I. Adagio – Vivace assai II. Andante III. Menuetto: Allegro molto IV. Finale: Allegro molto
The reason for the colloquial name ‘surprise symphony’ is due to the unexpected fortissimo chord which ends the otherwise piano introduction.
