The AI we have today is very advanced autocomplete. They are "trained" to predict the probability of the next word in a sequence based on the previous words. It's just a series of probabilities. That's a very different thing than sentience. The folks like Elon Musk who are fearmongering about sentient AI right now are grifters. Elon wants our government to see AI as a threat so he can grift more money from taxpayers and boost his projects. That's his angle. He's a talented opportunist. Personally, I think the human body and mind is more of an antenna for something we do not understand, but call a soul... but assuming there is no ghost in the machine, so to speak, and we are just a series of neural connections and a biological computer, today's AI still won't become sentient. It won't happen under a large language model. The model will have to be far more dynamic.
