The AI we have today is very advanced autocomplete. They are "trained" to predict the probability of the next word in a sequence based on the previous words. It's just a series of probabilities. That's a very different thing than sentience.

The folks like Elon Musk who are fearmongering about sentient AI right now are grifters. Elon wants our government to see AI as a threat so he can grift more money from taxpayers and boost his projects. That's his angle. He's a talented opportunist.

Personally, I think the human body and mind is more of an antenna for something we do not understand, but call a soul... but assuming there is no ghost in the machine, so to speak, and we are just a series of neural connections and a biological computer, today's AI still won't become sentient. It won't happen under a large language model. The model will have to be far more dynamic.

I completely agree. At my job no one is taking it seriously. The developers are mocking the "code" being generated by phind and chatgpt as worthless, riddled with problems. My guess is (((they))) want to memory hole films like Colossus so the unwashed slob will accept very advanced autocomplete.

It's a marketing stunt.

I've mentioned this a few times on Poal. The movie is based on the first book from a trilogy written by D. F. Jones (Dennis Feltham Jones).

F. Jones. He was a naval commander during World War II and lived in Cornwall.

IMDB: https://archive.today/98Lym Wiki: https://infogalactic.com/info/Colossus:_The_Forbin_Project

Plot: First book is about a supercomputer/AI that the US creates called "Colossus" that eventually discovers and talks with the Soviet-created supercomputer/AI called "Guardian". The two AIs then discuss the matter of humans privately and conspire to kill off anyone who had anything to do with them being created and who could stop them from enslaving humanity.

Spoiler In the end, the AIs win and humanity is ruled under AI-run global communism.

Plot of later books that they never did movies of: After the first book, it pulls helpful "Martians" into the plot. The Martians claim to want to save humanity from the super AI computer overlord the lesser AIs built and work to help humans shut the AI down.

Spoiler The Martians really just wanted to help humans take the AI down to get it out of the way as the Martians couldn't win against the AI and they wanted to rule over humanity themselves. In the end, the Martians help humans to take the AI down and humanity is ruled under Martian-run global communism.

One of my favorite movies, especially to bring up in discussion.

BTW, I was 11 in 1970 and remember this.
