The book is better. The movie is like someone read the back of the paperback, then tossed a few of those ideas into a script that was already written.

I am a big fan of Arnold movies and Running Man is one of the few bad ones. Consider that Predator was made the same year and Terminator was made three years prior.
Last Action Hero is so bad that it's so good.
It was a little too self-aware for it's audience. It doesn't allow a shallow interpretation. Unlike e.g. Commando, which can be an action movie to the kid or a comedy to the critic.
Last Action Hero was meta before it was cool to be meta. It may have ushered in the post-ironic age haha.
