my friend showed me a trick that works. use a butter knife, but instead of cutting it you should scrape the top with the serrated portion. Then the thinner scraped pieces of butter should spread easy on hot toast,bagel, etc.

This is something I learned at like 5 years old. It's why I buy both salted and unsalted butter. salted can stay out of the fridge and be fine.
