I did something worse. One day I noticed several desktop PCs had "blue screened" and the tech support guy was frantic. I decided it would be funny to create a .JPG with the identical content and proceeded to set the screen saver with the desktops of many more PCs with that image. The joke worked. The tech support guy was clearly flustered, so I fessed up.

This is acceptable and funny. I would have been annoyed but laughed at it.
