Pretty sure warrant canaries get around gag orders. That's the entire, 100% idea behind them.

the canary dying is the signal that the "mine" is compromised--get out or die. If it came back to life--would you trust the zombie canary? or the possibility the canary were simply replaced by an identical-in-appearance, but in completely different, member of its species-- "revived" behind closed doors?.
"Nothing to fear, go back and dig"?
once it is killed: the site is more-or-less *done* because warrants have been served; Putt stated he was gagged at the end [I presume, he was "gagged" not to tip any Goats off as to investigation details]. He did have one completely irrelevant post in the hiatus...something about tacos or something (I don't remember, but it appeared as nonsense, at least to me, when I learned of it after my own unrelated hiatus)--It was good to know he was still there though; the silence was weird.
My presumption is that since he was prohibited of certain speech on/concerning his own free-speech site by warning us, he instead of continuing to "act normally" in other regards, decided to use complete *silence* (and the dead canary) to rouse attention--pretty successfully.
He only let on to this when the site was shutting down.
if a warrant canary were to reappear after dying, it really would be like a zombie: it would be re-animated under the compromising influence (like a usurper taking authority by fraud, then using that authority to dismiss the allegation of fraud by the very authority earned through fraudulent means...sounds like a familiar theme now-a-days {and one more list for me to be on} whether truth in media, politicians in leadership, or other soulless horrors spelling the end of all common hope of a decent and good life in society).

the notion that real threats existed on Voat -- enough to justify killing the site -- is ludicrous. Voat.co was guilty of *thought-crime*. A shill can post pedo crap and terroristic threats to invite a warrant. Infuriating non-sense; I would like to learn the details though.
