Good night Gab. The issue is not to pay a small fee, but how will the payments and data be handled to ensure anonymity? Imagine Gab getting hacked and all data gets leaked?
Torba pissed off a lot of people with this move, and he's doubled down on it twice. In a deleted post, he quoted an article by vox day that said "The cult of free is over" when that was never the point, while also insulting all the non-paying members of his site in a non-deleted post.
People are quick to remember that Torba gave information to the FEDs when they asked without a warrent, never said a peep about a Christian Brother getting raided by the FEDs for supposedly quoting scripture (or making a statement about the bible) at a dyke and subsequently losing his business because he was blacklisted from all his suppliers (The business in question was Dinsmoor Sheepskins) while putting a million dollar bail on him for no reason.
These alone, on top of the fact that Torba refuses to go the much easier route of "Delete posts that are X old" and is quintupling down on his AI pet project has made a lot of people think that he's saving the data to give to the FEDs next time they come a knocking.
Torba says the AI business is bringing in more money than ever, yet at the same time moans about server costs and how people "expect Gab to have unlimited storage."
Which one is it, Turbo-kike?
That's a pretty fair point.
