This lack of HDMI 2.1+ support in the AMDGPU driver has been a major pain point for Radeon Linux users and has led to experimental patch alternatives developed by the open-source community outside of AMD.

Worked out "great" for FireWire but that didn't have the market penetration. What they're doing here is a different kind of penetration though.
