There's OpenWRT, and also
Is very good firmware. There are are alternatives and once you start looking into it, you will besieged by fanboys. I have a pair of old Linksys routers running DD-WRT connected to external antennas running a wireless bridge to my garage for the last 8 years. Haven't rebooted in over 2 years.

I used an old pair of Cisco Outdoor 2.4 Antennas and soldered the coax to the router board after cutting off the TNC. Garage demand is low. Couple of cameras feeding upstream, and AP and occasional streaming for video and audio. Still meets my needs, hasn't died and only cost me a few hours 10 years ago, so why replace. If you are looking for a bridge, TPLINK outdoor CPE510's are about $35 each on Ebay.
