As for a minimal Linux distro, Raspberry Pi offers a pretty striped down version with no GUI interface. I use this a lot. Honestly, I've not tried BSD. I'm sure I'd like it. Typically, I do a lot of edge computing projects and BSD isn't usually an option. I understand FreeBSD is available for Raspberry Pi, however, I understand it doesn't fully support all its peripherals.
