I worked in/for the gov through multiple shutdowns for about a decade. (Thank fuck I went back to private).
Nothing changed. Everything got done. Contractors were the ones doing the work most of the time since their contracts are already paid/guaranteed so if something came up they just call the contractors (essential employees) and have them do it.
Shut it down. Nothing that you really care about will change for probably at least 5 months. Everyone always get's their backpay. I only worry about military and cops/fire/emt if they don't have savings. Then again, some of them are contract now too. If you cant call the cops.. well, you already should not be relying on them entirely and be able to protect yourself.
