I guess the rational is it wasn't the government that sued him, it was a bunch of citizens. But the ruling against Jones was fucking absurd. Corporations literally ruin people's lives, outright kill them sometimes, and they're fined 50k here 100k there. Jones postulates that there was something funny about Sandy Hook and he gets a billion dollar judgement against him? Come on.
