It's too late to appeal to anyone further left than moderate. Journalists' primary audience are people who are looking for an authoritative source to verify their beliefs. Those people will leave if they "shift to the right" (as they would perceive it) and most people aren't going to start trusting them again after they've spent so much time insulting people outside their target audience.
