Malibar spinach or vining spinach
If you want to get started growing your own food, try malibar spinach. It is pretty easy to grow, and it reseeds itself every year. It will be perfectly happy living in a pot so you can take it with you if you rent. The leafs are green, but the vine is purple so it also looks interesting with that color contrast. The berries dry up into seeds, but when the berries are ripe, they can probably be used as a dye if you or your woman dye thread or cloth. Anyway, give it a try.
