Very nice. Do you buy a spore pack or something to get that started? I've only ever bought the little kits that come in a bag you cut open and keep watered. I have never tried to do them in a bucket before.

Also, I was told a fun gardening tip for getting food-safe 5-gal containers. Go to/call local restaurants(especially firehouse subs if you have one near by) and ask if they have any food-safe 5 gal containers they will give you or sell you for less. A ton of these places get food delivered in these containers and not all of them can be given back to the supplier for various reasons but would be perfect for container growing if you need some.

You can also go to bakeries and ask if they have any. You'll get them for free.

We used to own a Dairy Queen and our buttercream for ice cream cakes came in them. I collected them for such purposes. Ask a Dairy Queen, they usually toss out the empty ones.

That blows my mind. That is just so much freaking waste for something that could be reused or repurposed.

I agree. I tried to reuse many things that would have otherwise been tossed. Many times working with dairy if not cleaned properly the stench can be very foul. Those buckets have multi purposes. I have 2 in use now for compost.

That's an awesome tip, I'll start asking around. This was started with inoculated grain spawn mixed into about a 60% water 40% hardwood sawdust. I might consider a cement mixer if I decide to scale up in the future. You can kind of control the growth size by adjusting how large the holes are but if you go too big you'll have to temporarily tape it off until the mycelium locks everything into place.

I've grown shiitake, portabella and various cubensis varieties. I've toyed around with morel growing with no luck.

Have you attempted to make your own cakes? It's even parts brown rice flour, vermiculite, and water. Then you need to pressure cook it for sterility. After that you just need to inoculate them with spores.

That's awesome! I love LM, it's so alien! Everyone I know hates it, sadly :(
