I know that it can be used in some gardening but I've also read that a lot of people just bury it without spreading it around.

What do you do with ash from charcoal or burning wood from a stove/fireplace?

I ask because I need to clean out the grill since I think I'm going to try to smoke something this coming week since the weather will be good. I just wonder what everyone else is doing with the old ash. I only use hard wood lump charcoal for many reasons. Just wondering what others do with what is left over.

I usually scatter them on the mountainside to encourage morel growth, sometimes I'll mix it in with the garden and it can also be used in soap making.

I didn't realize that it would encourage morel growth. Also, 2nd comment about soap. Maybe ill have to give it a try.

You can extract the potassium hydroxide with water which can be used in soap making; it tends to make a softer soap than sodium hydroxide but you can counter this to an extent by adding salt.

Morels, tarragon, shallots, butter... God now I'm hungry!
