Damn son! When do you plant & harvest garlic?
On the bottom of the world, we plant in early Autumn, maybe April some time (you can plant later if you want), then harvest in Summer when the heads have formed and the necks (if they're soft neck) fold over. Last few years I've had to harvest in mid November, otherwise I would have lost it all to rot because the last 3 (La Nina) Summers have been really wet.
ah gotcha, early season crop?
Nah, it just kind of matures when it's good and ready down here. Planting can be any time from about March to June. But, usually by April the bulbs I've saved for replanting (the ones with the biggest cloves) have started to shoot, so I stuff them in the ground then.
I started with a few different varieties and basically kept the ones that did the best. Now they're all roughly the same variety and have acclimatized to my local microclimate, so they're getting better with each year.
