When I was a kid, I got stranded in a blizzard in my first car, and waved down another passing motorist with a flashlight, who gave me a ride to a friends house. After the storm was gone, I went into the local general store just like I'd been doing for 16 years. My dad had told me the grocer was a "cornholer", but I wasn't sure I believed him, he was so straight and level for all those years. But when I went in and he was the only other person in the store, he said "I hear you nearly froze your nuts off! You could have come here to stay with me!" and he had such a gleam in his eye that it freaked me out. I very rarely went in there again.
