There's Inquisition and there's Spanish Inquisition.

There are lots of lies about any kind of inquisition thrown around. It's quite common in history, that some less tyrannical regime gets toppled by a more tyrannical one, and then gets smeared as the ultimate evil. Christianity smeared pagans as bloodthirsty primitives, later catholicism got smeared by protestants, then christian monarchy and traditional society got smeared by french revolutionaries and nationalists, nationalists got smeared by communists, and so on. In all those cases the toppled regime was far more beneficial than the toppled one, but those black-propaganda-lies are still believed, and the falsehoods are seen as "progress".
