I'm sure it's compromised to some extent like every other engine but it at least gives you the warm-fuzzy feeling that you can turn off any results from the jewgle server, as well as other servers/sites in the settings.

If curious, fuckoffgoogle uses Searx as its underlying search engine tech

It's a meta-search engine, meaning it searches your query against other search engines for you, then aggregates the results.

It is a little bit gay in the department of allowing yourself to be influenced. Ultimately the ranking is effected by how Google, Bing, Yahoo, and DDG want things ranked. But it's a bit less gay than using them directly because it's less likely that all of them censor all the same things and you are denying them ad revenue.

Using a searx instance is one of the best choices for search engine alts. You could go wth startpage, but they're a more centralized engine. Who knows if they truly are respecting your privacy.

Is searx amazing? Fuck no. But there are no real competitors when you're talking about a private search engine.

The biggest problem with meta-search engines is they pull from the big search engines for all their results. So if Google is censoring something, and so is bing and yahoo, etc you won't see it on searx.
