From what I read they were stopped by US authorities on a remote road in Texas. Inside they found a bunch of dead and dying invaders. No water. Another article reads like the truck was stopped for some reason, authorities were called, and some escaped before authorities arrived. If that true, why were they just chilling in a death box they would escape from?

Because they were too dumb to understand they crossed the border already.

Any smartphone can use an offline GPS map (no data carrier).

Do you think a gps-only map would work inside that trailer though? I have one of my old androids loaded with OsmAnd. It struggles inside and under dense tree coverage.

In hot locations (south), trailers are almost always using tarps (to cover their sides), GPS signal can go through.
