Personally I had a good friend whose husband and friends are all long time hunters and they were happy to take me under their wing. I’d recommend taking the hunter’s safety class and talking to some people in the class. Hunters are generally super friendly and more than happy to help newbies get started. We need all the hunters we can get. Don’t be afraid to ask hunters if you can tag along, even if you don’t have your hunter’s safety card or tag. Talk to the guys who work in gun shops, Cabela’s, bass pro, places like that. They’ll be happy to steer you in the right direction. What I did last year, no tag or anything, was walked with a friend while he was hunting and got loads of experience.

You’ll need to do a hunter education course to apply for a tag, but beyond that I’d find a local that will show you the ropes. I got in with a small group of hunters who have been hunting for 30 years and are super excited younger people are even slightly interested.

Yeah I used to shoot targets with a bow. Just never invested that much energy into the hobby. But now I'm getting older and looking for constructive things to do. Hunting would go hand in hand with the fishing.

Many of them you can buy over the counter at places like walmart, but for elk in a specific area they’re lottery based. If there are extras you might be able to buy one later in the season.
