Rinse and repeat until they can't deal with it. Not as viable as you may think, and that plan is extremely risky. If the Russians were allowed to continue massing for an attack, the Germans would have been overwhelmed. They did think of tactics like you mentioned, or simply holding the middle-Polish border where they split the nation in two, but after *much* debate and deliberation the only option left was a pre-emptive strike against the USSR. You have no idea just how close they were to winning, too. It was a razor's edge.
