Interesting. Surely a workaround could be found these days.
In any case, this being just a theoretical scenario and not a thought out plan in the least, how do you know what happened with the guns back then? Seems like a little slice of history I'd be interested in.
The workaround is like how weapons were sent to the IRA during the Troubles. It wasn't official, they were smuggled in. Yes Limey, this is a crate of car parts for the UK market. No, please ignore that it is addressed to Seamus O'Catholic in Belfast. EDIT: and don't call me Shirley.
My understanding is a good portion of the weapons sent to the UK during the war were niche calibers or in poor condition. Those were immediately scrapped or sold, and used to buy guns more useful to the war effort. Post-war, same deal. The Brits ran into issues with US import laws, so the best solution was to just scrap or sell them in the UK. The total number of guns actually sent was relatively small, less than 100,000, because this program competed with official Ministry of Defense contracts for weapons.
Thanks for those details. Who says we can't learn from history?
