That mask was probably for ceremonial use or parades. You could take that face plate off with the pin on top by the look of it.

Or probably just not meant for use in all situations, so you'd need to be able to put it on and remove it very easily. I can imagine artillery and other such soldiers wearing these; non-combat support troops, etc. I can't imagine someone rushing in to a battlefield with this on, though.

Hard to breath, hot and itchy or arrow in the face or face smashed with hammer. The pros probably outweigh the cons.

Easier to breath in than a cloth mask. Does look ceremonial though

I doubt very much that these masks would protect the wearer from arrows or a good face smashing.
