Here’s a silly question - why were they being held in the camps to begin with?

For the same reason we put Japanese in camps. Jewish interests had almost run the country to ruin. Hitler wanted them gone, but opposition kept them in country, so they were collected into camps in hopes that they couldn't do damage during the war effort.

And then what? Did he want to kill them or eventually let them go? Good comparison to the Japanese, we didn’t genocide them.

Same reasons the Japs were held in US camps.

I bet we would’ve put the Japanese in the camps to work if we were experiencing a labor shortage like Germany was. I bet that their labor would be so valuable that we would really want to keep them alive and working. You can only have a Gulag type Work camp if you have a large population to draw from, Germany did not.
