I heard an interesting theory about the abandonment of radio from the tinkering hobby space, and that is the advent of consumer computers was an irresistible draw for the smart creator and builder who no longer wanted to build heathkits, but instead created and built with the Texas instruments and commodore devices instead.

I'd love to build a solid state radio, but everything is SDR now.

Early computing was mostly DIY, but I'm sure the later generation of machines that started to show up in the early 80s didn't do the hobby any favors. The shift towards cheaper consumer goods that were not repairable by the end user (i.e. no tubes) really was the killer application here.
