Vietnam was draft service. They kind of were forced to or spend decades in jail
They could have refused/protested all together.
Which goes back to "decades in jail". When I was still JW, I heard about that from the elders in the congregation about spending years in jail for denying to go into draft service. At the time, no one knew they'd eventually let them go early. When your 18, and you hear 20-40 years in jail, or a chance to come home after being shot at by gooks, most kids would take option two. Espeically when you consider this was the 60s and 70s, and the information we have now was not widely spread during that era.
