Those silly superstitions helped bring about the Black Death.
We begin to read wild accounts, such as that by English writer Walter Map, where cats were becoming part of satanic rituals: “the Devil descends as a black cat before his devotees. The worshippers put out the light and draw near to the place where they saw their master. They feel after him and when they have found him they kiss him under the tail.”
They were intentionally infecting themselves with parasites. They were already infested with parasites that caused this disgusting behaviour.
In the bible, and other ancient accounts, when they talk about demons possessing people they are talking about parasites.
Cats are a common way for humans to get infected. The people back then probably noticed that those who were around cats seemed to take on strange behaviours. They didn’t understand exactly what was going on so they assumed the cats were evil and told people to stay away from them.
