No they weren't. The Catholic Church controlled all academia and governmental affairs. They used saints and miracles to maintain authority with lies. If you were skeptical of their decrees, you often ended up burned at the stake. The church arguably didn't give way to skepticism and the scientific method until the 18th century. They suppressed technological advancement for a millennium.
