Yes.

Culturally, China has a very "you are with us or you are the enemy" mentality.

At a base level: "If you don't think / act / look like me, then you are a threat to me."

This is a mentality that survives from the feudal clan days of China's history and was heavily reinforced by Maoism.

As such, there is little room for multi-party political systems or different "schools of thought". And, as such, this naturally results in heavy authoritarianism. You can see this acted out in how religions and minority ethnic groups are treated.

People have a hard time classifying China. It isn't "communist" nor is it "capitalist". It is "whatever makes the party stronger". (And by party, I mean the CCP or Chinese Communist Party.)

They (unlike NK and other more 'pure' communist countries) have come to understand that economic success = makes the party stronger. So, they focus on economic success at the cost of everything else (the environment, workers rights, personal freedom and liberty, etc.)

Not naturally, it took several genocides to select for the docile populace that inhabit China in the modern era.
