Most had dirt floors, and in the winter they hunkered down. Germany was not as prosperous as the U.S., no other country was. Most had a radio though, and this got people more involved. What I am trying to say is: Nationalsocialism was impressive in the III. Reich, it was a very effective ideology. However it had the luxury to build upon all the know-how and technology of the preceding century/centuries.
