Or just do some reading and learn some scales.

Many of 'em are pretty intuitive.

You could also look into CAGED. Search YouTube 'guitar CAGED'.

I mean, I know where the notes are, its just sometimes the song he is playing the key is fucked or something and the normal notes dont quite work, when I know I have the root right

Oh, don't go by his playing.

He sees something like an Fm7 chord that looks hard and just plays like an F chord. This results in the whole song being out of key. You can't just substitute a Bmin with a B and have it sound correct. When y'all 'look up the chords' you're suppose to actually play the ones listed and not 'close enough for government work'.

Actually he does play those 7th chords and sus chords and whatnot, its probably me with my mindset making you think otherwise LoL
