I'd have had to have been smart enough to not leave any DNA at the scene. So, that means no fights, no rape, and no bladed weapons.
(I'm not gonna go become a serial killer, just to be clear about this. I am not even interested in killing anyone. I find the idea horrible - even if I hate them.)
So, no ties with the victim is ABSOLUTELY essential.
I'd also have to be really careful with a phone these days. They can track your location pretty well with a phone. That includes no modern cars with a black box and a GPS. I need to never show up in the investigation. That limits me to firearms and being 100% they're dead.
So, I also would have to avoid any patterns.
firearms do leave them a clue though.
They do.
Your choices are many. You can hold and dispose after a while, or even after every kill - which is a bit expensive.
Drop the pieces of the firearm in various fast food dumpsters across a city, preferably not the city you live in. Make sure you're buying the firearm from a private party. Use revolvers so you're not leaving brass at the scene. Never leave the discarded parts on a route that leads back to your house - just in case.
You need an excuse to be on the road a lot and solitary, so that you're just living life according to your neighbors, spouse, kids...
yeah being far from home would help, just put your cell on your dog collar. but even without that there are license plate cameras that keep track of who went by certain locations
