I think I'd go insane if I went that long without a car.

When I was enlisted, the first thing I did after boot (far less than a year!) was go visit my parents and pick up my car and guitars.

When I got to my duty station, I drove there.

When I was attached to the embassy, I bought a cheap car like the 2nd week I was there.

It wasnt so bad when my bike was working

Yeah, I could see that.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn the bike started right up if you first tried a hot wire to the pump and then replacing the wiring to the pump at a later date.

As for the car, you're gonna have to spend the money I'm afraid. It has been about a year and nobody has shown up with the part to just give it to you. I'm afraid fate gave you a chance to work, and not a chance happening that just gave you the part.
