I think the wood butchers were included in the construction as well. The only things square and level are the things I have built, the rest wood butchers and drunken hacks.

That sounds about like many of the old houses I've lived in over the years. I once lived in an apartment that had a 6" difference in the floor.

If you wanted to put something up, like a shelf, you didn't square it with reality, you squared it with the house - or it'd look off.
