There are some not too bad multi effects pedals for under $100 out there. Zoom ones usually or chinese stuff. What's the difference LoL

I am sure the CNC machining makes them much better than in the past and much more playable

Hmm... I wonder if a 'new student' would be able/willing to replace pickups and tuners, along with a better saddle and nut.

Probably not until they have stuck with it for a year or so, I wouldn't think

Hmm... That sounds reasonable... It's too bad, really. I bet some nice pickups would make that guitar sound quite a bit better. My guess is that that's the weakest link.
