Yeah. It always could be someone else. I know they did songs for the Monkees, but maybe not all of them

I know that at least a couple/few of them did learn to play some. I don't think they were ever all that good with them, but I seem to recall reading that they'd learned to play somewhat.

Didn't they go on tour?

I do believe so. I believe they were faking it with pre-recorded music.
