Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask Crazy, or myself.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

It is with a heavy heart that I must make this announcement. On Tuesday, at approximately 11:30 PM, COF (aka CynicalOldFart) lost his battle with cancer. He went peacefully in his sleep, with the hours leading up to it being surrounded by family. He'd been suffering for quite a while, steadily declining to the point where lucidity was impossible. He was heavily medicated and comfortable in his passing, if you need a reason to be optimistic.

There were two big loves in COF's life, family and music. The two would even overlap from time to time. As his passage grew closer, I'd share tracks with his family to share with him. He appreciated music and family until the end. I'll be making a donation to a nearby school's music program on his behalf - or at least anonymously. If you'd like to contribute to that, just let me know. Otherwise, I have it covered. Having interacted a bit with his family, he has been well looked after.

His contributions to the thread weren't immediate. It took some encouragement to get him to take part in the threads, as he didn't think he had anything to add. Lo and behold, he had plenty to add. His continued insights, knowledge of music and music history, and his archivist works were appreciated by all. Fortunately, @Crazy will continue the archives that COF started. But, once COF got started doing something, he was committed to doing so.

COF was quite fond of Biff and I. We often spent hours typing back and forth. What we shared was a true friendship. So, let's try to keep in mind that there's a person behind each and every one of these accounts - especially during the holiday season. We'll miss our daily interactions, as I'm sure others will.

We'd spoken about how the guitar thread had lost some steam and I spoke to him about resigning from the thread. He was a bit disappointed and really wanted the thread to go on. He felt the thread was an important candlelight in the darkness that is the web. So, with that in mind, let's go ahead and have a thread - and let's go ahead and celebrate. Drink and smoke 'em if you got 'em. Share in the music and dance like nobody is watching. That's what COF would have wanted.

I've had a hectic past couple of months and we barely got this year's track ready in time. I've typed enough, so let's start with the music already! Have another TSO cover!

2021 Christmas - Wizards In Winter (The Usual Suspects) (share.fngt.gq)

Rock on, Christmas Bears! Rock on!

Fuck thats sad. He will be missed

[–] 2 pts

Thanks. I'll likely send a link to this thread to his family (we were pretty close). So, yes... Yes, he will be missed.

It'll be good for his family to know/see just how much he impacted the lives of others.

[–] 1 pt

Thanks for letting us know Buddha. This is very sad news, COF will be sorely missed. Condolences to friends and family, and rest in peace music man.

Phew that is smoking. Lickity split guitar playing.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah, this one has a ton of guitar work. We had issues deciding what piece to cover, and decided to go with this one as it was assumed I'd take care of the heavy lifting. Then we procrastinated. Summer rolled on by and soon we were preparing to travel for the winter. Our usual Christmas piece will start just after January and we'll finish it a month or two before it's needed.

Another great poalr left us.

I still had hope for a remission. He told me months ago about it.

My condolences to his family.

So long COF and say hi to The Owl and Boobs for us!

[–] 1 pt

I have some contact with the family but definitely won't interject myself during these trying first days and holidays. When things settle down, I'll share a link to this so that they can see the lives COF touched.

[–] 2 pts

As sad as it might sound, I'm still glad that Poal has had him running Paddy's sub and sharing great stuff with us.

Great minds think alike and he, like Owlchemy, was one of the pillars that made Poal so worth it.

He's gonna be greatly missed.

[–] 2 pts

He had a lot of interesting insights and comments. He'll be missed here.

Awesome song. I listened to the songs you linked last week, and was blown away. Thanks for sharing!

[–] 1 pt

He will indeed be missed. He'd often put more hours into the thread than we did.

And, glad ya liked both last week's and this week's tracks. Last week was something just banged out to share with COF and this week was something which took a ton more effort.

[–] 2 pts

Gonna miss the cynical old fart.

The music sounds awesome. Super tremendous. Great job both of you!

[–] 1 pt

Yeah, I do indeed miss him. LOL Who are we gonna ask when we don't know who wrote the songs?!? Or who among us has previously recorded the songs?!?

So, yeah... He's missed and will be missed - but, equally important, he will be remembered.

Glad you liked it! We almost didn't have it done. We finished it up today.

[–] 1 pt

He will definitely be remembered.

Today? That's cutting it pretty dammed close

[–] 3 pts

Merry Christmas all you guitar folks. I'm very sorry to hear about COF. He was a real lover of music. He knew his stuff. He appreciated all you guitar gods. He will surely be missed.

I'm curious, how old was he?

Here's a track for Christmas. It's been around awhile. I like this song year round. Silent Night (soundcloud.com)

[–] 0 pt

He was in his late sixties and awesome work. He'll be missed. He'd been battling cancer for quite a while, though knew it was terminal going in.

Where'd you get your tab from, as it sounds very familiar. My tab is/was something picked up online and I forget who arranged it.

I'm fading fast, so may not be here all that late.

[–] 3 pts (edited )

The tab is from a guitar magazine: Guitar One Presents, Guitar Magazine Rock around the Christmas Tree. A DVD was included. It's from 2004.

It's got a few songs that I play like year round.

Edit: I figured he was close to 70 since he knew the same songs I knew. I gotta a feeling we were born the same year.

Tell you what, it's easy being into music when you grew up in that era. He's like most Baby Boomers aka Boomers who liked music because it was so good then.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah, he was a little older than I am.

And, we grew up at a time when music was still in the early phases of being available to the masses any time they want. The transistor radio really had a huge impact on society.

[–] 0 pt

The whole Christmas party here at my house, my family, sang along with you on that one, great job! Thanks!

[–] 2 pts

in honor of the Cynical Old Fart having passed away, I am once again going to share a song that my friend Chris and I made just for him...

It wasn't that long ago that we made this

The Cynical Old Fart (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

Indeed, you too got that one in just under the wire. He got to enjoy it.

[–] 1 pt

I am very happy that he got to hear that and enjoy it.

[–] 0 pt

Damned right. He was fading fast at that point.

[–] 2 pts

Hi guys and Merry Christmas!

Here's an instrumental version of a Blind Willie Johnson tune.

God Don't Ever Change (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

Nice work! Particularly poignant for this week.

[–] 1 pt

One of the first Christmas songs shared was actually not originally a Christmas song - it's Greensleeves.

You may know it as "What Child Is This", which is a Christmas carol:

https://share.fngt.gq/music/misc/Greensleeves.mp3

[–] 1 pt

Excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–] 0 pt

Thanks! That's actually a delightfully fun piece to play.

Also, you mentioned ego earlier in another comment. Meh... It is what it is. I put my hours in, so now I can play pretty much anything. I figure the biggest difference is that I put those hours in - and those hours were diligent practice.

Don't get me wrong... I know I'm good. I'm proud of being good. Still, put your hours in and so can't anyone else. Well, it helps if you put those hours in while you're younger. Or at least start putting them in while you're younger. I've always wanted to 'be the best' and have been driven since I was just a wee tot. It was built into my upbringing.

[–] 1 pt

Here is a Christmas song that my friend Chris and I played the other day. It's a real banger! Little Drummer Boy (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

Nice! Hmm... I do a drum-only cover of the song where I go hog-wild on the kit while still keeping the basic rhythm going. It'd be great to have a cover over it. Maybe next year I'll send it along early for y'all to dick around with.

[–] 0 pt

That sounds like it would be fun!

[–] 0 pt

It'd fit in well with what you recorded, which is why I thought of it.

I think you're the first to cover that song for the yearly thread.

[–] 1 pt

I love this song. Johnny Cash has a great version. He sings it straight and to the point.

[–] 0 pt

I'll check it out thanks

Merry Christmas!

[–] 1 pt

I just fixed this up a bit, as it was in the deep archives.

This is Nadeshda singing along with my Silent Night track:

https://share.fngt.gq/music/misc/Silent%20Night%20-%20TB%20%26%20N%20%28Fixed%20Volume%29.mp3

She too is sorely missed. Her contributions brought a great deal of joy to COF.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Didn't know him well but I'll miss him none the less... Rest easy, Cynical Old Fart; Tell Boobs and Owl I sed hey.

[–] 0 pt

He was a great asset to any in any community where he participated. We had pretty much daily communication for years, so he'll definitely be missed.

[–] 1 pt

Here is a Christmas song written and performed by me Merry Christmas (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

So very well done Crazy !!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas Brother and a VERY Happy New Year

[–] 0 pt

I wondered if you'd do something original this year - and you did!

[–] 0 pt

Actually that one was from last year.

I didn't write a new Christmas song this year. I been working on a new song and it's been in my head being worked out for a while now. Some songs are like that. Some are quick and easy but this one is more challenging to me somehow. I hope it turns out good

[–] 0 pt

I don't recognize it. I think I was pretty drunk during last year's thread, which would explain it.

I just dug out something from the deep-deep archives!

[–] 0 pt

A few years ago, we started with the TSO covers and folks liked them. We've done them ever since, but here's our first:

Christmas Eve (in Sarajevo):

https://share.fngt.gq/music/misc/TSO%20Christmas%20Eve%20%28B%20%232%20%26%203%20%26%20B%3B%20J%20St%20%26%20keys%3B%20TB%20%231%20%26%20P%29.mp3

[–] 1 pt

That is awesome. Tell you what, Carol of the Bells is one of the all time great hooks.

[–] 0 pt

Glad ya liked it. Carol of the Bells is one of those songs where if it hadn't been written someone would have written it as it's just so 'natural' sounding.

[–] 0 pt

This song isn't a Christmas song at all.

It was recorded by Biff when she was still new to the guitar. It took her weeks to learn to play this, and she put in those hours just for COF. This whole time, it has never been shared - as it was for "COF Only". (We'd discussed sharing it after his passing.)

If you know Biff's story and if you know the lyrics to the song, you'll understand why he wanted her to record this song. He often referred to her within the context of this song. You may recall snippets of conversation that alluded to this recording, but here it is in its entirety and for the first time ever in public:

https://fngt.gq/tmp/blackbird.mp3

If you believe in such things, and he did, perhaps he's here listening now... If so, that's a favorite of his.

[–] 1 pt

That's a great acoustic guitar song. Did she learn Yesterday too? That one is really cool for acoustic guitar. McCartney also.

[–] 0 pt

She doesn't know it (as far as I know, she's still in bed), but it's definitely something she could learn at this stage.

[–] 0 pt

i do not know the lyrics or the song but it sounds beautiful

[–] 0 pt

You should look 'em up, as it will make perfect sense.

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night,
Take these broken words and learn to fly.
You were only waiting for this moment to arrive."

Something like that. It's a good Beatles song.

[–] 0 pt

It's a Beatles song? Hmm, wonder why I don't know that one. I love the Beatles
