Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask COF, Crazy, or myself.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

And, you? What made you pick up the guitar and then made you continue to pick it up?

I knew I was a musician by age 4, after hearing Boots Randolph wailin' on a sax, but I didn't get that Sears Silvertone / Alamo amp till I was 10. Formed my first band when I was 12. Played brass instruments in high school. Thought I was pretty good till I moved to Dallas, where there was some hot-shot named Stevie Ray Vaughn that was gettin' a lot of attention in Deep Ellum. I went and checked him out, and after that I stopped playin' for years. It should've inspired me, but for whatever reason, I just quit and started a family. I've never even done any serious skills practice since.

On a side note fwiw, I still have that 1951 Alamo three tube amp in working condition, right over there. I turn it on, and after a few initial pops and hisses, it comes up quiet, and waits for me to touch a string. I opened it up one time to check the caps and the wiring, and it was an awesome rat's nest of point-to-point solder connections.

Nice. I still have my first Yamaha GC and have never sold a guitar. (That's amazing for someone in my position!) I've sold amps and pedals, but never a guitar. I've given a few guitars away along the journey, but never sold one.

I've never even pawned a guitar.

Formal music education was "forced" on me by my parents, but I do not regret that and I enjoyed learning. I've taken formal lessons in french horn and trumpet, for example. I've taken piano lessons, percussion lessons, and even some informal lessons on how to play a concert and pedal harp.

I can pick up most instruments and play something that sounds vaguely familiar. Familiar enough to fool a layperson, at least.

But, the guitar will always be my true love. Classical guitar will always be my not-so-secret pleasure. For so many years, I've put in an average of 2 hours per day - of diligent practice. No, not noodling around, but deliberate practice.

Do you have a "#1 favorite guitarist of all time"?

Can I make a request for a future FNGT? Kath stretched out with "Free Form Guitar". EVH did "Eruption". Do you have something like that, something that shows off a chunk of your skills?
