Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask COF, Crazy, or myself.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

Hi all, I went through some old tapes from 10 or 15 years ago, and found a Nirvana cover that got shelved. So I stacked some more tracks and made it presentable.

Blew (soundcloud.com)

[–] 2 pts

Raw and growling, just as it should be. Great job.

[–] 1 pt

Thanks. I think I got the guitar sound right. I'd like to hear it with a bad-ass female vocalist, but I don't know any.

[–] 2 pts

That sounds great. I don't think I have ever heard that song before

[–] 2 pts

Now that brings back some memories. I haven't heard that in ages. Nice job on it. Cobain's often hard to get the tone just right, but you pretty much nailed it.

[–] 2 pts

Thanks. Sometimes when I'm lucky, I can get the knobs set just right on that Boss ME-50, and it's like, "Huh...I wonder why I couldn't get that sound out of it yesterday."

[–] 2 pts

LOL It was pretty close, which ain't easy. Cobain used the weirdest shit, like he raided a pawn shop or something.

[–] 2 pts

I haven't heard this in a while, a great cover of a great song ... Bravo !

[–] 4 pts

I thought this might be a good song for tonight crappy recording but as always I'm lazy... It's titled Goin Down Drinkin .. https://soundcloud.com/carl-suiter/goin-down-drinkin-original?si=4ece296e704f4a248d039bed471e07b8

[–] 2 pts (edited )

It's good. All effort is awesome. I have heard some awesome songs with terrible quality don't mind the pauses either glad music is being produced

[–] 0 pt

Thanks it's most appreciated ..

[–] 2 pts

Cool song, thanks for sharing it!

[–] 1 pt

Hey there Mr. Carl, so nice to see you around again. You're sounding as awesome as usual. Glad to hear you're out letting people hear you again. Stay well and visit us again soon.

[–] 1 pt

Thank you Sir hope all is well in your world

[–] 1 pt

I like it. Judging by the comments, so didn't a bunch of other people.

Some of those strumming pauses would have (maybe) benefited from some golpe, but I'm a classical guitarist and heavily biased!

[–] 3 pts

OK, here's a rarity (for me). I get to post a track. This is my grandson I kept bugging to record something so I would have something to share. So here is G with his version of Social Distortion - Reach For The Sky (files.catbox.moe).

[–] 1 pt

Excellent song. It's a dystopian, negative song. I like those type of songs. Your grandkid is pretty good.

[–] 0 pt

Thanks. I wasn't familiar with the song but of course I'm glad he's playing.

[–] 1 pt

Great job, he has some good pipes.

[–] 1 pt

Thanks, I'll tell him. He can use the encouragement.

[–] 1 pt

His G string (no innuendo) is out of tune. ;-)

Other than that, not bad! I've never heard the song before. I don't even know who Social Distortion is (I don't think).

He's got some power behind his vocals. That's a good thing. You could convince 'em to share more!

Also, we never did get to hear you beat on the drums.

[–] 1 pt

I thought there was something a little off. Just like his sister he is trying to develop his confidence, which will help his vocals.

As for me, that ship has sailed. They sit gathering dust in the other room but I just can't make in there now. My 4 y/o grandson bangs on them when he comes over so I keep them set up. That's worth it in itself.

[–] 1 pt

Pfft... You know how low our standards are!

Though, I suppose you could just record the grandson and share that!

[–] 3 pts

Yup. It's time for another FNGT! Like normal, we'll go ahead and get you started.

We're still lazy. We haven't made anything truly new for a while. That doesn't mean we're out of new material! In fact, today's track is a fan-favorite and gives me a wonderful excuse to pull out my Gibson SG Double-neck. There aren't many songs that require a 12 and 6 string electric on the same guitar, but this is one of 'em (if you wanna do it right).

BDE - Hotel California (07.03.21) (share.fngt.gq)

You can tell it was during a set by the duration. If it was at the end of a late set, or if we were playing around, we'd have made the ending of the song go on for about four more minutes. The dancing people like it when you do, as they get to wiggle a while longer.

Rock on, Poalr Bears! Rock on!

[–] 3 pts

Great job!

pull out my Gibson SG Double-neck

The first time I saw one as a kid, I priced it out in a music catalog. And thought about all the long hard sawmill hours I would have to put in.

But then I saw Rick Nielson with that 5-neck monstrosity, and I started to think more in the terms of weight factor vs how many times I would actually use it.

And then I suddenly had a family and a pile of bills, so the matter was settled.

[–] 2 pts

Meh... They're not that expensive. You can probably pick one up for less than the $8k (I think, I'd have to check) cost new, as people find they're unwieldy, heavy, and get very little use in the real world.

And, I can't actually come up with a good reason for five necks. So, I don't own one of those. I'm not even sure if they sell them.

[–] 2 pts

I read Hamer made three of them for him.

[–] 3 pts

Some mighty fine pickin and singin, Very well done Sir !

[–] 2 pts

Glad ya liked it and great to see you!

Holding up okay?

[–] 3 pts

Doing well, I'm actually out playing again. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I trust all is well in your corner of the world, tell Mrs. Biff I said hello

[–] 3 pts

Damn right it's a fan favorite, especially when done so well. I know you weren't really set up for live recording and it sounded even better live. You have a few other recordings done (the Spanish flavored one is my favorite) and the studio version are all so excellent. Would have been great to be there.

Tell Biff I'm dancing in spirit and have my lighter out.

[–] 2 pts

She has been informed and said to say hello and that she's glad ya liked it.

Yeah, by now there should be a ton of recordings of this song. I'd say that it's performed in at least 50% of our performances - and I'm pretty sure that's lowballing it by a good 20 or 25%.

Even the younger generation knows and loves it. So, we can pull that out at most any performance.

I don't think anyone else has heard our Spanish rendition. At least not anyone online.

[–] 3 pts

Well, the night is young.

[–] 2 pts

Sounds great. Can you believe this song ain't even on the greatest selling album of all time. Eagles are so good that they sell like a million records without Hotel California on it.

[–] 1 pt

They could release an album of pure shit and sell millions of copies, probably...

Glad ya liked it and it's kinda neat how that one spans the ages. A number of songs do, but I can count on pretty much anyone under 75 being familiar with it.

[–] 2 pts

Sounds great! I have some company that just came over tonight and they all said you all sound great! I agree with them

[–] 2 pts

Glad they liked it!

takes a bow

It's definitely a fan favorite. It's also a great excuse to pull out the SG double neck. There are only a few songs that that's useful for, so you might as well do it while you can!

[–] 2 pts

That and Stairway!

[–] 3 pts

Ol' Morpheus is tugging on my leg. Prolly out for the night. Thanks everybody for the tunes.

[–] 2 pts

Thanks for showing up and sharing!

Like always, we're here all weekend.

[–] 1 pt

Yep, there's always a tomorrow (until there isn't).

[–] 1 pt

Either way, we'll be here - probably!

[–] 2 pts

Here is a song that me and my friend Chris played as we were drinking beer after we had gone on a Beer Run (soundcloud.com)

[–] 2 pts

Cool song, good job. I've never heard that song before.

[–] 2 pts

LoL I did not know that one either until my friend introduced me to it, its a fun one to play for a party

[–] 2 pts

I didn't think there was a song that I haven't heard... but by golly this is one of them. Nice job Crazy and Chris .. Bravo !

[–] 1 pt

Thank you Carl!

Nice to hear from you again!

Glad to hear that we added to your musical knowledge!

[–] 1 pt

Nice.

Amusingly, I've covered that song - back when it was still popular and on the radio. So, whenever that was. I was nearing the time I retired, so that means 2005ish?

I don't think I've heard it since.

[–] 1 pt

I never knew that song was even popular.

I only know it from Chris!

[–] 1 pt

Oh, yeah... I think it was popular on the country channels at the time. But, we're talking 15 years of cobwebs in my mind since then, so you might want to verify that. I'm pretty sure I'm correct, however.

69 fg110 Erie ball strings he-13 le-56

[–] 1 pt

Is the "69" indicative of the year?

Those Yamaha acoustics sure do last forever. My first was a GC 10, from a similar era - just a couple years older.

[–] 2 pts

Yes 1969 so I understand it was built in nippon Japan with about 1200 others and rest were in built in korea so tuners aren't original those fell apart. Love old Yamaha guitars. I don't wanna record my electric it's a Squier to a boss gt 1 into a fender champion and it don't sound that great cause pickups are blaaa. neck is wiggling lol can't set intonation. I most stay below 15th fret and guitar really sounds bad. G string has a funny tone vibration in guitar and will not tune regardless. One day I'll own a real fender or les Paul I'm not picky and I'll record then

[–] 1 pt

Grab an Epiphone Les Paul (if you want advice). They're generally very playable and worth every penny.

[–] 0 pt

Great to see you posted. Hope to hear more in the future. If you want to have more capabilities in recording, try

https://www.audacityteam.org/

It's opensource and free. It's pretty powerful and lets you manipulate your sound rather easily.

Y'all come back now, hear?

[–] 1 pt

Thanks for the advice I'll have figure out recording with the boss gt1 as my interface and I'll get creative with acoustic

[–] 0 pt

You're more than welcome. Just keep at it and you'll be able to play the way you want quicker than you thought. The one thing I see most accomplished guitarists say is dedicated practice, even short amounts, is the best way to improve. Leave your guitar out where you see it and practice, not just play, the basics as often as possible. 15 - 30 minutes every day or every other day will show results. There'll be plateaus where it doesn't seem you're getting ahead, but push through it. It happens to everyone. Good luck on your journey and take us along when you feel like it.

[–] 2 pts

Here is some more of me trying to play banjo along with my friend Chris last week. Something different (soundcloud.com)

[–] 2 pts

I would check out a well known tune like foggy mountain breakdown to learn the thumb and how use that top string. Either way I liked it sounded like something I would of strummed when I had a banjo

[–] 1 pt

Thanks for the suggestion. That was the first time I ever played one, this was after maybe an hour of playing and I was pretty much just trying to figure out how to get it to make banjo sounds

[–] 2 pts

Absolutely Steve Martin is a great example of fine banjo playing. My grandfather could gotta have that thumb beat

[–] 1 pt

LOL Well, it is indeed something different!

[–] 1 pt

There is no doubt about that.

What it is, is unclear

[–] 1 pt

Have you talked to him about borrowing it for a month or two?

[+] [deleted] 2 pts
[–] 1 pt
[–] 1 pt

Damn, getting there quickly. You'll be playing the Beverly Hillbillies theme by next week.

[–] 1 pt

i thought that your comment was about the banjo playing LoL.

I love the Beverly hillbillies! One of the funniest tv shows ever!

[–] 1 pt

It was. That music gets stuck in my head every time I see the show.

[–] 1 pt

That was the same night he brought it over last week or whenever that was.

theBuddha reminded me to ask him to loan it for me to learn how to play and I did and he said he would so I should be able to figure it out, hopefully. I'm confident

[–] 1 pt

LOL I am in bed with the laptop, mostly just working on an article for the L-T site. I can't listen to that at this hour of the night. Biff is sleeping.

[–] 1 pt

Thats allright, its D, B, C#, A, B, G#, A

[–] 0 pt

LOL I had meandered off to sleep by then.
