You can always check. Modernity makes that easy as Wikipedia regularly includes that information and covers a ton of songs.

LoL Well they have hundreds of millions of plays on the youtube, thats a good sign of popularity

It is! The problem there is that there are things like multiple uploads, uploads with the wrong name, uploads to other streaming services, etc...

But, we don't overthink it all that much. If most of the band has heard of the song, or it has been on the radio a lot lately, etc., then we can/willl include it without even bothering to look up that information.

So, we don't invest too much time thinking about it.
