I have one like that. They filled up the top with gas - that's where it was pumped. Then gravity fed it down into the hose. It's glass so that buyers could see how much gas they were getting.

Yeah that is how I assumed it worked, I never saw it in action

That's cool. I just thought he had it there to remember his gas station days.
