I'm learning the bagpipes as I want my kids exposed to their actual cultural heritage and not just maori supremacists stone age violent shitty culture just because they now control our education

[–] [deleted] 5 pts

Sweet, it's great to see another piper here! How far along are you in learning? I've been playing for about four years, but I still feel like a beginner in a lot of ways because I don't get the chance to practice regularly enough.

[–] [deleted] 4 pts (edited )

Only 4 months so well behind you. This is a multi year project.

Good news is that there is a rural pipe band nearby who does free practice lessons weekly. Which I'll join once business and kids grants me free time

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Nice! I started playing on a whim, and ended up in my local pipe band, too. My instructor is the pipe major, it turned out, so I couldn't really say no. It's been really good for my playing, especially since we compete.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts (edited )

I think the key to learning anything new is finding a use.

That means you and i finding a crowd to play to (busking) or a band to join.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

For a while, I was practicing weekly at the park, and that's been a lot of fun. I made some friends, I've randomly gotten some tips, and I've made a few people's day.

[–] 2 pts

I was pirating books the other day and thought about you.

So, I pirated some books for you too!

https://fngt.gq/tmp/Pipes.zip

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Cool, thanks! I'll check it out when I get a chance.

[–] 4 pts

That's awesome. We've had another user share their bagpipe prowess with us in the past in a few of these threads. Let's hear what you can do!

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

I can play high road to garloch. Just finished learning grace notes. I'm now onto learning amazing grace because it's my wife's favorite.

All this on a practice chanter. All going well in about a year more practice I'll buy a lowland bagpipe

[–] 4 pts

Thats awesome! Keep at it!

[–] 3 pts

Another user, as mentioned, is quite good on the pipes and has shared several tunes with us. They did Amazing Grace just this past Christmas. I'm sure @NoTrueScotsman would be interested.

I meant to drop this off here last week, but somehow I completely forgot, so here is MacPherson's Rant (hulkshare.com). This is a single we finished up not too terribly long ago.

This is the story of Jamie MacPherson, who was the son of a Scottish Laird and a gypsy. He was an unrivaled swordsman, and a great fiddle player. He was a bit of a scoundrel and tended to do a bit of robbing and stealing, but the fact that he was beloved by the people and the son of a Laird meant that anytime he was caught, he would get a reprieve. Finally, one local sheriff was so sick of it, he had them set the clock forward so they could hang him before the inbound reprieve could make it over the bridge of Banff. The clock face is still covered to this day, and MacPherson's broken fiddle rests in the MacPherson clan museum.

It features our new fiddle player, who I'm thrilled to be working with after years of sharing stages at various festivals.

I recorded the guitar part on my Emerald, which is a great live guitar, but has a pretty significant boost in the low mid that makes it a bit more difficult to record with. It needs a lot of EQ. I played the flute part on a Muramatsu EXIII.

[–] 3 pts

Love the harmonies and the mix sounds great! I’m happy to hear another track from you my friend.

[–] [deleted] 5 pts

Thanks! I'm trying really hard to get back into the groove this year. I have a couple of new tracks in the pipeline, but they're much more difficult than anything I've recorded before. One is a medley that /u/NoTrueScotsman will appreciate, as it leads with The Atholl Highlanders.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Nice! I haven't actually learned to play that one yet, but I'm familiar.

[–] 2 pts

I love your tunes. They're so different from everything. Been missing them. Glad you're back.

Thank you for the kind words! I'm trying to record more this year.

[–] 2 pts

Sounds like you got yourself a good fiddle player. It seems fiddle players in your band are like drummers in spinal tap! Great song, sounds great and nice to see you again!

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

It seems fiddle players in your band are like drummers in spinal tap!

That comparison is often made!!

[–] 1 pt

Love that line from the movie - "Yeah, our first drummer died choking on vomit...wasn't his".

[–] 1 pt

Thats funny! I hope this one is the lucky one that gets to stick around a while

[–] 0 pt

Mighty fine work Mr. Reems ... Bravo !

[–] 4 pts

https://soundclick.com/r/s8fvvi

This is a song I have been working on the last couple days for a mix contest. It’s not my playing on anything. I re-amped the guitars and bass, but the band supplied the DI tracks. It’s called Turning Point by Dark Time Collaboration

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

This kicks ass! Love the thunderous sound of those drums!

[–] 2 pts

Thanks Reems, Glad to see you around man! The drums gave me some interesting obstacles as the kick had a lot of hihat bleed that sounded terrible when trying to get the click of the beater to stand out. I ended up figuring out how to trigger it with a sample kick, so I could augment the high end. Took some time, but that’s a skill I’m happy to now have. I added 3 different reverb aux tracks for the snare to try and make it sound huge haha.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Normally, if I wanted to kill a hi-hat bleed on a kick while augmenting the hi end, I'd probably use a multiband compressor at that frequency to try to kill the hat. What did you sidechain to the sample kick?

[–] 2 pts

Cool. Pretty heavy rock here man! Sounds good to me. Nice mix

[–] 2 pts

Thanks. It’s some collab from guys from Kaos AD, Madball, and a couple other bands I’m not familiar with. I enjoy mixing a lot though, so any chance I get to work with other peoples stuff is generally fun.

[–] 2 pts

What are you going to win?

[–] 2 pts

There's definitely some skills there. The recording is done well.

[–] 2 pts

Thanks for listening! Yeah mixing is not the same art form as performing at all, as it’s much more craft based; but I do get to express a bit of art with the additional elements and sound manipulation to try and keep attention in certain places, and move the listener from one part to the next. It’s a challenging craft, but very rewarding when it starts coming together.

[–] 1 pt

Nice job on the mix and kudos to the band

[–] 0 pt

Thanks for listening uncle carl. I don’t know if they plan on touring at some point or if it was just a little project to pass the time; but I had fun mixing it regardless

[–] 1 pt

I was very much impressed by the tunes you put out here .. Great songs, well written, perfectly arranged .. You're one talented human .. Bravo !

[–] 4 pts

Here's one from the archives from an old friend. Hope she comes back around sometime. Here's Nadeshda with the Bill Withers classic, Ain't No Sunshine:

https://clyp.it/v1dbah0i

[–] 2 pts

It's always good to hear her voice.

[–] 2 pts

She is missed. Several people have tried to get her to join us over here, maybe she will in the future. We'll see.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

I remember when she posted this one! Excellent!

[–] 1 pt

Maybe if we say her name 3 times while clicking our heels she'll show up. I doubt it but it's worth a shot.

[–] 2 pts

That was so great! I love her singing so much! Thanks for sharing this!

[–] 3 pts

We're on vacation. That doesn't mean we don't have material to share, it just means it is older stuff that hasn't been heard in a while.

This one was recorded at a lovely studio where I used to spend a great deal of time, and was recorded with some wonderful friends backing me.

GnR - November Rain (hulkshare.com)

Give it a minute to start playing.

Rock on, bears. Rock on!

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

I'm ashamed to admit that I have no familiarity with the original, but this is incredible!

[–] 1 pt

How the hell do you not know November Rain?!?

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

I am musically stunted. I haven't listened to much popular music since 1990. I'm finding out that there are a LOT of great new artists!

[–] 1 pt

Thats a damned good question!

[–] 3 pts

Man alive I'm glad you posted this again. I didn't download it the first time. Got it this time. Great track, for the umpteenth time. I gotta check your band out when you guys get playing again. Yeah, now I realize that Trans Siberian Orchestra track is like a million times harder to do than this.

Man I never get tired of this song. Welcome to the Jungle, yes, November Rain, no. That was so amazing these hard rocking dudes came up with this gem. Then it kicks in in high gear with that lead guitar and the harmonies. Amazing stuff. Kinda like Stairway when it changes gears after the solo.

[–] 1 pt

If you ever want something from the archives, ask COF.

Glad ya liked it and it's definitely one of their best songs. It was a great treat to play with some old friends in a familiar studio. It's like an encapsulated memory.

[–] 3 pts

Another awesome job, guys!

[–] 2 pts

Thanks. That was down in Cambridge, MA at a studio where I used to do a ton of session work.

I guess I should say 'up' 'cause I'm still not home, but you get the idea.

Those were all older musicians that I'd played with many times before. It was a hell of a great time.

[–] 3 pts

So good man. I love that song.

[–] 2 pts

It's one of my favorite GnR songs. I absolutely love it.

Glad ya liked it.

[–] 3 pts

I’m half tempted to try the vocals on it; but the other half of me doesn’t think I can get up that high anymore haha

[–] 2 pts

Perfect as always.

[–] 1 pt

It was a lovely experience. A trip down memory lane.

[–] 1 pt

This is too good. You even got thunder crashing in there. Great job on this to everyone involved!

[–] 1 pt

It was quite a time. They were all older musicians I'd played with before, in a studio I'd been in many times.

In many ways, it was a trip down memory lane and this was one of the memories we shared.

[–] 1 pt

What a fine memory it is!

[–] 3 pts

Never been as I have no talent nor guitar, but you are a river to your people.

[–] 1 pt

I am not sure what that means but thanks!

[–] 3 pts

So you post your music clips here in this post or on that other website?

[–] 3 pts

If you have a track to share this is the place. Use whatever host you want to store the track and link it here.

[–] 3 pts

You can use what ever format or site that you like, as long as we can hear it, its all good

[–] 3 pts

Here is a song from the other night where Chris is playing a ukelele singing Over the Rainbow (soundcloud.com) in the style of that Hawaiian man who sang that song so nicely

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

That is the one that queued up after Brickyard Blues. The Hawaiian man you're referring to is the much revered Braddah Iz.

[–] 1 pt

Yes that's it, I couldn't remember. He was great.

[–] 1 pt

Sounds like this might have been a little later in the evening.

[–] 1 pt

Yes it was! You have a great ear COF!

[–] 2 pts

Cheers goats ...

Just got off work. Happy Friday night. Rock out with your cock out, and jam out with your clam out!🤟🤟

[–] 2 pts

Hey guys, I hope you all had a great week. Happy Friday!

A few weeks ago (on the site that shall not be named) I posted a recording of a refrain of Alice's Restaurant that Arlo did in the slowed-down portion of the 50th anniversary of the song. But that's not the way the original is played.

So now that I had a fresh understanding of his picking style, I set out to learn to play the original---or at least a basic version of the first refrain. And this is what I figured out. Not perfect, but close enough for me.

How to play Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant Massacree (bitchute.com)

[–] 3 pts

That's some damn good picking. Gonna mess with this one, thanks for the lesson.

Check out Dave Van Ronk's Green Rocky Road. It's similar to this.

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

Great honkytonk! Love this, it's right up my alley!

[–] 2 pts

Thats some fine picking you got going there!

[–] 2 pts

Thanks boss. It's one of the earliest songs I remember hearing that I thought, "I'm gonna learn to play that some day."

Now that I'm well over 400 years old in life experience, I figured it was about time to take it off the list.

[–] 2 pts

I am not good at that fingerpicking stuff like that with the alternating strings. I don't ever really play like that.

[–] 2 pts

Woah, dude, nice braid job on your beard.

That's some pretty sweet picking, more involved than one would think. How he can play that live and ramble on with his storytelling and joking with the audience is amazing. Nice job.

[–] 2 pts

I know, and if you listen carefully to the original, there's something slightly different in each refrain. It seems somehow superhuman to be able to finger-pick something so complicated, twisting it as he goes, and be able to tell an 18-minute story without a hiccup.

And then add he wrote it too. Smh, I dunno. He must've been receiving signals from outer space.

[–] 2 pts

Here is my band....https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3RnPfbav1Rg

Please let us know what you think.

[–] 2 pts

That's some pretty sweet rock. A little old school sound, starts out with a five to one groove. Vocals are really good and I like the sound. What do you play?

[–] 2 pts

I play the drums and sing. Thanks my man.

[–] 2 pts

I'm an old drummer myself but haven't played in decades. You've got a range of inflections in your voice. Glad you shared this, please continue to visit us.

[–] 2 pts

I like the groove. This is cool stuff. Thanks for sharing this with us! What instrument do you play?
